After my last post about buying carbon offsets for flying, I started to wonder: What makes a good offset? How do I avoid scams? Is there a strong argument against it? Seriously, what are we doing here, folks?
Fortunately, I came across this comprehensive guide to offsetting from The Guardian. I’ll let those interested read it, but it weighs the arguments and counterarguments for buying offsets, defines important terms like “additionality,” talks about what certifications offset projects should have, and explains why prices vary (including why some projects are so cheap). In my limited experience, climate reporting from The Guardian has been outstanding.
I also liked this site on buying offsets, in part because I’d never heard of NRDC and they have some cool resources including this article on how to raise an environmentalist.
And on one more highly relevant and related topic: why Can’t Mumford and Sons just make an album that sounds a little like the first two? Their newest one sounds like it resulted from a hostile takeover by Snow Patrol.
